To those unfamiliar with the term “discreet” it describes a gay (usually man) who isn’t open about his sexuality. Leading a discreet gay dating lifestyle might involve sexual encounters with others or it may involve non-physical encounters.
The discreet person hasn’t come to terms with their sexuality and chooses to live a “double life”.
Discreet gay dating - is it dangerous?
There may be dangers that come with discreet gay dating. If the person is sexually promiscuous, having several encounters without commitment, then the risk of getting a disease or sti is something to consider. Having said that there is still a risk of contracting a virus even if you’re not discreet.
I choose to be open
It’s my personal preference to be open and not lead a discreet lifestyle. There’s something about owing your sexuality that I find both liberating and empowering. Having said that it might be unsafe to be open especially as a Muslim.
It’s not safe be openly gay and muslim
We wrote about what it means to be gay and muslim. The sad reality is that it may not be safe to be openly queer. In countries such as Somali, the Middle East and other parts of Africa one may be forced into a discreet gay dating lifestyle out of fear of punishment or even death.
Discreet gay dating - using apps
Apps such as Grindr serve to facilitate a discreet gay dating lifestyle. On our site we encourage new members to be open where possible, and where it's safe to be so. This transparency helps people get to know each other authentically.
We understand that this choice to be open is not as easy for everyone. Read what we wrote about being queer Muslims - is it a dirty word?
To all brothers and sisters who live a discreet lifestyle we understand the difficulty that coming out can bring with it. We encourage you to follow what is best for your social and mental well-being whilst also considering those who may be affected by our life choices. Wishing you well inshallah.
